The State of BizOps 2025: The Function Redefining Strategy and Execution in the AI Era
Business Operations (BizOps) has rapidly evolved from a niche function to a cornerstone of high-growth, data-driven organizations. The State of BizOps 2025 report, compiled from interviews and surveys with operators across industries, reveals a function that is increasingly strategic, deeply cross-functional, and at the forefront of AI integration.
BizOps: From Tactical Firefighting to Strategic Orchestration
Originally born in Silicon Valley tech companies like Yahoo and LinkedIn, BizOps has expanded far beyond its early roots. The function now spans industries including finance, healthcare, retail, and media, with over 1,100 open BizOps roles on LinkedIn each week. As Matt Mochary put it, BizOps is designed to “parachute into any problem area and dig in and fix it.”
The core mandate? Bridge strategy and execution. BizOps leaders are tasked with performance management, OKRs, strategic planning, and driving high-priority cross-functional initiatives. In fact, 73% of BizOps teams are responsible for both process optimization and project management, with 55% also owning strategic planning.
Essential Skills: Communication Over Code
Despite the rise of data tooling, the report finds that soft skills now outweigh technical prowess. The top-rated skill for success in BizOps is cross-functional communication (82%), followed by project management (64%) and process design (45%). While tools like SQL and financial modeling remain important, they’re seen as table stakes.
Atlassian’s Jon Yang says it best, “as you progress and become more senior, a much higher premium is placed on soft skills.”
BizOps in the Age of AI
One of the most compelling themes in the report is the rise of BizOps as an “AI integrator.” With AI tools like ChatGPT becoming default in the BizOps toolkit, the function is shifting from execution to orchestration. BizOps leaders are helping companies navigate technical debt, manage cross-functional change, and turn automation into business value.
This shift is anchored by a concept called the AI Triad—a coalition typically made up of a CEO (visionary), CTO (technical validator), and a BizOps or Chief of Staff leader (executor). This model enables companies to move quickly on AI initiatives without sacrificing strategic alignment.
